Chapter 13

Stolas

We watch as Verkor slowly disappears from sight. It doesn’t take him long to hide in the shadows. I hope he finds something useful, because I don’t think either Obsidian or I will last until the Super Blood Moon party. Breaker is pushing every button I didn’t know I had. My hellhound has never been more agitated. He wants to kill Breaker and send him to hell, find him, and torture him. Having Finley closer to us has eased him some. Not enough to stop his singular thoughts, but enough that I can block them and focus on the task at hand.

“Okay, if you had to pick someone out of this crowd to be a narc, who would you pick?” Finley asks, while scanning the crowd of shifters.

“Your best bet is to find someone that is off by themselves,” I say.

“Or, how about someone who keeps glancing our way,” she says.

I keep scanning the crowd trying to find who she’s talking about, but no one is standing out.

“The tree line over to your right. The skinny girl with the blonde hair.”

As subtly as I can, I turn my attention that way and see about the girl. Every few seconds her eyes land on us, but she quickly looks away. She keeps fidgeting with the hem of her shirt then switches to tucking her hands into her long-sleeved shirt.

“Maybe, but it looks like she would run away if Obsidian or I walked over to her.”

“So, don’t.” I look over at Finley and raise a single eyebrow. “I’ll go over and talk to her.”

“I don’t want you going over there alone,” Obsidian growls.

“Who said I was?” She smirks at him. “I just need to talk to her alone, but you guys can be hovering nearby.”

“Fine, but let’s make this quick,” Obsidian says.

As one unit, we circle around the other shifters. The closer we get to the female shifter, the more leeway we give Finley. She’s always a few feet from one of us. Eventually, Finley makes her way over to the shifter. I’m over to Finley’s left and Obsidian is hiding behind a nearby tree. We’re both close enough to be able to hear the conversation.

“Hi, I’m Finley,” she holds out her hand to the shifter. Tentatively, the female extends her hand and shakes Finley’s.

“Hi, I’m Nova.” Finley smiles wide at her; Nova doesn’t return it, but that doesn’t stop Finley.

“I’m new to this sort of thing,” Finley says, waving her hand around in the air. Nova’s eyes rapidly look around.

“Are you going to be Breaker’s mate?” Nova asks.

I hear a small growl come from nearby, and I know it’s Obsidian, but I return his sentiment. No way in hell is Breaker taking our mate and pup from us. My hellhound growls in my mind, and I have to try hard to keep my skin. I haven’t had trouble controlling my hound since I was a pup learning how to shift, but this place, more specifically Breaker, is testing my very control.
